Geographic Presence

The United Church has a strong historical presence throughout Papua New Guinea, particularly in regions influenced by the early work of the London Missionary Society and Methodist missions. Historically, the church has been especially strong along the Papuan coast, the Southern Highlands, Eastern Papua, the New Guinea Islands, and Bougainville.

The church’s pastoral and administrative work is organized into eleven regions, allowing it to effectively minister to diverse communities across the country. These regions provide the framework through which spiritual leadership, administration, education, health services, and community development programs are delivered.

UCPNG Regions

The United Church in Papua New Guinea is organized into the following eleven regions:
Western Region
Papuan Gulf Region
West Central Papua Region
East Central Papua Region
Urban Region
Papuan Islands Region
New Britain Region
Niu Ailan Region
Bougainville Region
Highlands Region
Hela Region
These regions collectively cover much of Papua New Guinea, from the southern Papuan coastline to the Highlands and from the mainland to the island provinces.

Areas of Coverage

Southern Region The church has a strong presence throughout the southern Papuan provinces, including the Gulf and Central regions, where the work of the London Missionary Society laid the foundations for Christianity in Papua. Many congregations, schools, and church institutions are concentrated in these areas.

Highlands Region The UCPNG serves communities throughout the Highlands through the Highlands Region and Hela Region. The church expanded significantly into the Highlands through Methodist mission activities and continues to maintain a strong ministry presence among both rural and urban populations.

New Guinea Islands Region The church maintains extensive coverage throughout the New Guinea Islands, including East New Britain, West New Britain, New Ireland, Manus, and Bougainville. The New Britain, Niu Ailan, and Bougainville Regions represent some of the strongest historical areas of United Church influence in Papua New Guinea.

Urban Centres Through the Urban Region, the church ministers to members living in major towns and cities, including Port Moresby and other urban centres. This region reflects the growing movement of people from rural communities into urban areas for employment, education, and business opportunities.

Coastal and Island Communities

The church also serves many coastal and island communities through the Papuan Islands Region and other island-based ministries. These communities continue to play a significant role in the life and identity of the church.

National Ministry and Institutions Beyond congregational ministry, the United Church operates and supports a wide network of institutions throughout Papua New Guinea. These include:

  • Theological education institutions

  • Lay leadership training centres

  • Teachers’ colleges

  • Primary and secondary schools

  • Health centres and aid posts

  • Women’s, youth, and Christian education ministries

The church’s presence therefore extends beyond worship services and encompasses education, healthcare, leadership development, and community transformation programs throughout the country.
